District Requirements
Students in grades 1-12 are required to read a minimum of five books during each nine week grading period. Students will read independently in school for 30 minutes every day. Students are also required to read for a minimum of 30 minutes at home daily in addition to other homework assigned.

Shenandoah Middle School Reading Activities
  1. Teacher-directed and computer assisted reading instruction
  2. Daily 30 minute independent reading time
  3. Reading Club
  4. Accelerated Reader Program offers rewards for reading achievement
  5. Motivational speakers
What Your Child Should Be Reading
Students can check out books from the school library or any public library. Books checked out may be fiction or non-fiction. Accelerated Reader books can be checked out from the school library or the public library. Students will take the Accelerated Reader test on a book as soon as they are finished reading it. If the test is passed, the student will enter the book's title and author in his/her reading log which is kept in the Language Arts portfolio.

Magazines, comic books, and catalogs are not considered books for the purpose of the school assignments. However, magazines, comic books, and others may be read for enjoyment.

Parent Responsibilities
Encourage and monitor the reading of your children's daily reading at home

  1. Ask your child to tell you about what he/she has read.
  2. Read with your child.
  3. Visit bookstores and libraries on a regular basis.
  4. Talk with your child about his/her reading selection.
  5. Start a home library.
  6. Reward and praise your child for his/her reading accomplishments.
You will be notified if your child does not read a minimum of five books each nine week period. Intervention strategies need to be put in place if your child is in danger of not meeting state standards. These strategies are to be used in school and at home to accelerate the reading process.

Criteria To Assess Your Child's Progress
  1. Teacher input
  2. State test scores
