Attendance Procedures
Students attend school 180 days. When a student is absent from school, the parent or guardian must call the attendance office, (305)856-8282, ext. 2207, and inform the school of the following:

a. Name of parent or guardian
b. Name and grade of the student
c. Reason for the absence
d. Day when the student will be returning to school

Reasons for satisfactory absences:
a. Student illness - After 5 days, the student needs to provide the school with a doctor's note
b. Doctor's appointment which cannot be re scheduled
c. Death of a family member
d. Religious holidays
e. Authorized school activities

All other absences will be deemed unsatisfactory.

Attendance Procedures
It is mandatory that students attend all their classes. Students who do not go to class will be dealt appropriately by an administrator and parents will be contacted.

Tardies To Class
Students must arrive to class and be seated before the bell rings. Students who are late will be penalized.

Tardies To School
Students who arrive late to school must go directly to the attendance office. Except in some cases, tardies are considered unsatisfactory.

Leaving Early From School
When it is necessary that a student leave school early, the parent or guardian must go to the attendance office to ask for the student. The parent or guardian will sign a permit to leave school for the student. Students can only be picked up by individuals who have been previously designated in the emergency contact card. An identification with a photograph is required.

Emergency Contact Card
Each student is issued an emergency contact card at the beginning of the school year. Parents are to fill the card out and have the student return it to his/her homeroom teacher. Students cannot be released to anyone except the parent or guardian or the person specified on the emergency contact card. When a student's telephone number and/or address changes, the school must be notified. An up-to-date telephone number is extremely important in case of an emergency.

Withdrawls and Transfers
Students requesting transfers or withdrawals from school must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Students withdrawing or transferring from school must follow these procedures:

a. Teachers and the registrar should be notified at least 24 hours in advance. Prior notification is necessary so that the student's grades may be averaged.

b. Parent or guardians must properly identify themselves when they come in to withdraw the student. A note requesting a withdrawal or transfer cannot be accepted by itself. Proof of change of address within Miami-Dade County is required ( i.e., light bill, deed).

c. Books must be returned to all teachers and monetary obligations must be paid.

d. After registration, a student may not transfer from one school to another within Miami-Dade County unless there is a change of address with valid proof.

Cafeteria
The cafeteria is open for breakfast and lunch daily for all students. Every effort is made to keep the cafeteria as clean and attractive as possible. All students are required to pick up their trash and place it in the designated area before leaving the cafeteria. Students will go to lunch with their class and will be picked up by their teacher at the end of the lunch period.

Students desiring free or reduced lunch must file an application at the beginning of each school year. No student is allowed to use another student's lunch number. No student is allowed to leave the school campus during lunch.

Bus Transportation
Bus transportation is a privilege and is available only to students living more than 2 miles from the school. Failure to observe district rules of behavior may result in denial of bus privileges.

Bicycles
All bicycles are to be parked in the grassy area between the teachers' parking lot and the west wing of the building. All bicycles should be locked and chained. The school will not be responsible for any stolen, vandalized, or lost bicycles.

Sick/Injured Students
Students who are ill and need to leave school may contact only those individuals listed on their Emergency Contact Cards. When students have any kind of injury that occurs in school, they are to inform a teacher or any school personnel immediately. Regardless of the seriousness of the injury, it must be reported at the time of the accident, and the student is to complete an accident report in the attendance office.

In order to cover the cost of materials, it is necessary to charge fees for specific classes. Special fees are charged in band, home economics, and shop.

Fund Raising Activities
Fund raising activities are designed to allow clubs and groups a way to earn money for extra projects and school service projects. Rules governing school fund raising are set by Miami-Dade County Public School Board Policy. No fund raising activity, except those associated with school-sponsored activities will be permitted.

Report cards are issued every nine weeks. Interim progress reports are sent home during the mid-point of each reporting period. We encourage parents to consult with teachers/and or counselors regarding their child's progress. Homework
Homework is an integral part of the school program. Homework can be in many forms: reading a book for a book report, working on questions, and even watching a TV program and writing a critique. Homework is designed to supplement classwork and to give the student the opportunity to practice the skills learned in class.

Incomplete Work
It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements with each teacher to make up work missed due to permissible absences. In order for the student to receive credit for the work, it must be completed within the agreed upon time.

Lockers
Hall lockers are not available at Shenandoah Middle School. Lockers will be issued to students in physical education class. Students are not allowed to share lockers. Students are to purchase and use school approved combination locks only.

Misconduct Grading Policy
The basic criteria for judging student behavior and assessing disciplinary action against a student will be the Miami-Dade County School's Code of Student Conduct. A copy of this code is given to students at the start of the school year. Ignorance of the contents of the code is not an excuse for violating any of its provisions.

Truancy
For all classes missed that are unsatisfactory absences, the student will receive an "F" as an academic grade. Repeated truancy will be referred to the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) for appropriate action.

Suspension
A student who is placed on suspension is expected to make up all written assignments missed during the suspension period. Failure to do so will result in the student being given an "F" for those assignments.

School Center for Special Instruction (SCSI)
A student placed in SCSI will have the opportunity to earn academic grades while in SCSI. The work completed in SCSI will be transmitted to the student's regular teachers.

Assignment to SCSI may be made as an alternative to outdoor suspension. Students may be assigned for up to 10 school days.

Personal Property
Students assume responsibility for their belongings. The school endeavors to protect all personal property but is not responsible for losses. Large sums of money and articles of real or sentimental value should not be brought to school. Campus exclusions: skateboards, radios, tape players, beepers, cellular phones, and other electronic devices are not allowed on campus and must not be brought to school. These devices will be confiscated by the administration and returned to the parent.

Student Activities
There are a number of exciting activities held each year at Shenandoah Middle School. These activities are planned, organized and implemented by staff, parents, and students. In order to participate, students must meet the school requirements for the particular activity.

Student Services
Students are encouraged to make use of the Student Services program. Counselor appointments are scheduled on an on-going basis and provide both individual and group programs for all students.

Student Supervision
The school does not provide supervision for students until 30 minutes prior to or15 minutes after the end of the regular school day unless they are engaged in a scheduled before or after school activity.

Textbooks
Textbooks are issued to students in academic classes. The textbooks remain the property of the school and are on loan to the students. Students are responsible for all books issued to them. If a book is lost, damaged, or stolen, it must be paid for before another book can be issued.
